Graphics Made Real

Info

Artwork In brief

”Graphics Made Real” combines abstract graphic design elements with tangible textures and intricate lighting of real-world environments. The piece is rooted in Material Design, design language pioneered by Google, inspired by the interplay of textures, light, and shadow in the physical world. Aesthetically the piece strikes balance between sleek modern minimalism and handmade vintage imperfections. The project began as a personal artistic endeavor, but I further developed it to align with my client Ars Fennica’s branding purposes in 2023.

Ars Fennica is the most significant visual arts award in Finland, with a total prize of 50 000 euros. The foundation required distinctive fine art visuals for branding purposes, including website, social media presence, print catalogues and videos. Sometek provided a comprehensive visual concept along with key branding visuals (including video & animated logo) and consistent set of 36+ images for diverse communication needs. The motion graphics (mashup video above) were used in artist video documentaries, social media ad campaigns, and live on stage during the awards ceremony.

Ars Fennica Illustration Concept

  • More attention by renewing visuals. The style and theme of the illustrations evolve annually keeping each contest fresh.
  • The 2023 concept “Graphics Made Real” draws inspiration from material design seamlessly blending graphic design elements with features from the physical world such as textures and lighting.
  • Creative Layering. All imagery is designed with minimalist aesthetic providing breathing room for text placement on top of the images (e. g. social media content). This ensures that the spectator’s focus remains on the overall message, without competing with the artworks of the year’s candidates.
  • Four recognizable themes / patterns (2023):
  1. Abstract ”brushstrokes” inspired by material design
  2. Paths and stairways symbolizing the progress of the competition towards the selection of the winner
  3. Reflective water textures combined with branding elements (Helsinki is a seaside city and event venue Kiasma is situated by Töölönlahti)
  4. Overall dark color scheme inspired by polar nights (the winner is announced in November, during the darkest season in Finland)
