Journey 07 of 07 — The Final Chapter

Ancient Sea
Lifted on Sky

Two hundred million years ago, these mighty mountains were coral reefs in a prehistoric ocean. Then, the bones of the Earth shifted — and the sea was lifted toward the heavens.

Chapter VII — Geology, Deep Time, Ancient Ocean

Imagine —
200 million years ago,
these mighty mountains, the Dolomites,
were coral reefs in a prehistoric ocean.

Triassic Period · ~252–201 million years ago
Tethys Ocean · Coral & sediment accumulation
Alpine Orogeny · Tectonic uplift begins ~35 million years ago
Present elevation: up to 3,343 metres

Then, over ages beyond memory,
the bones of the Earth shifted in sleep.
Tectonic forces lifted the ocean toward the heavens,
turning ancient sea life into stone —
monuments of rock, taking every imaginable shape.

Five towers, like stone fingers reaching up to the sky.
Immense primordial walls.
Shadowed peaks looming like the gates of Mordor,
silver clouds shrouding their secret paths.

Dolomite towers — ancient coral reefs made stone The Tre Cime di Lavaredo — three fingers of an ancient seabed
Dolomite canyon — echo of an ancient abyss
Panoramic Dolomite landscape — ancient seabed elevated

From the green valleys rise the jagged crowns,
majestic guardians of the sky,
standing silent between earth and heaven.
Their pale colour and sharp, dramatic peaks
are carved from mighty dolostone —
born of coral and sediment,
still whispering the memory of water.

Thus these mountains rise like ghosts of an ancient sea,
fossils of a lost kingdom of the deep.
Some ridges roll like giant waves crashing, now stilled in stone.
Some curve ever so smoothly, flowing softly as water.
One seems like a massive tsunami of stone in the distance,
motion measured in millennia.

Then come the terraces of stone, leaning into the light,
rising like altars to the ancient sky.
And finally the mighty canyons —
echoes of the ancient abyss.

Between them lie the valleys,
once deep seabeds where coral forests swayed,
surrounded by peaks like frozen waves,
now shaped by wind instead of current —
echoes of the sea carried in the clouds.

The Journey Ends Here

Seven journeys. Seven ways of listening.
The mountains waited — patiently — until you were ready to see.
