In the story told in Genesis, God warned Noah of a great flood and told him to build an ark. Noah brought his family, animals, and provisions aboard.
Rain fell for forty days and nights. As the waters eventually receded, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. A dove returned with an olive leaf, a sign that life was returning.
When the earth was dry, Noah’s family and the animals left the ark. God set a rainbow in the clouds as the sign of a covenant never again to destroy all life by a flood.
